MORE THAN A GARAGE: STEP INSIDE TODAY’S NEW FIRE STATION 8 | 2026 Spring Otsego View FROM THE ASSESSOR’S OFFICE PROPERTY VALUATION Market values are estimated as of January 2 each year and reflect what a typical buyer would pay under previous (Oct. 1-Sept. 30 annually) market conditions. Minnesota law requires property to be assessed at 100% of market value. Values are determined using existing or updated property records, qualified sales data, and market trend analysis reviewed by the Minnesota Department of Revenue. Because values are adjusted by property type, location, and market activity, changes may vary from property to property. PROPERTY CLASSIFICATION Property classification is based on how the property is used as of January 2. Classification affects tax capacity, which determines a property’s share of taxes. Classification rates are set by state statute and may differ from zoning designations. Property owners will receive their 2026 Property Valuation Notice in March or April. This notice provides the estimated market value and classification of your property for taxes payable in 2027. QUESTIONS OR CONCERNS If you have questions or disagree with your valuation or classification, contact the Wright County Assessor’s Office at 763.682.7367. Many concerns can be resolved by reviewing property data, area sales, and any supporting evidence you provide, such as appraisals. If resolved before the Local Board meeting, no formal appeal is required. APPEAL OPTIONS If concerns remain, property owners may appeal beginning with the Local Board of Appeal and Equalization Meeting on April 22, 2026, at 6:00 pm at Prairie Center. Attendance requires scheduling with the Assessor’s Office and allowing an interior property inspection per state statute. If unresolved, appeals may proceed to the County Board of Appeal and Equalization, followed by the Minnesota Tax Court, if necessary. Additional appeal details are available on the Wright County website. The new Otsego Fire Station is far more than a garage for fire trucks—it’s a modern, purpose-built facility designed to help firefighters train effectively, stay healthy, and respond quickly to emergencies. The single-story design allows fast access to apparatus bays, while extensive on-site training features— including a training tower, movable wall maze, simulated smoke, confined space and ladder training areas—support ongoing state-required training for Otsego and neighboring agencies. Inside, the station includes a large training classroom that doubles as the City’s Emergency Operations Center, public spaces highlighting local history, and dedicated “hot, warm, and cold” zones Apparatus Bay Training Mezzanine CONSTRUCTION PHOTOS, FEBRUARY 2026 | 9www.OtsegoMN.gov As Otsego develops its first fire department, an important advantage of the new staffing model is full-time firefighters who are trained as EMTs to handle medical-related calls. Across Minnesota and the nation, fire departments are responding to a rising number of calls for service, many of which are medical emergencies. Establishing a local fire department staffed with trained firefighter/EMTs allows the City of Otsego to deliver faster, lifesaving care when seconds matter-providing critical medical intervention before an ambulance arrives and strengthening the community’s overall emergency response system. Minnesota is unique by having mostly private, non-City owned ambulance services controlling the licenses to provide ambulance and EMS services to our communities. OTSEGO FIRE STATION STAFFING MODEL THE VALUE OF FIREFIGHTER-EMT CROSS-TRAINING As a board-certified physician in Emergency Medicine and Emergency Medical Services, I have seen firsthand the positive impact EMTs have on patient outcomes. EMTs are the backbone of many EMS systems across Minnesota and Wisconsin, providing critical early care in both hospital and prehospital settings. Fire departments across Minnesota, and nationally, are experiencing increased calls for service with a substantial number of these calls being medical emergencies. While ambulance services provide patient care and transport capabilities, first responder agencies, like fire departments, can play a critical role as a link in the chain of survival. People experiencing life-threatening allergic reactions/ anaphylaxis, diabetic emergencies, heart attacks or opioid overdoses can start to be treated and stabilized by EMTs even before an ambulance arrives at the call. Minnesota law defines the scope of practice for various levels of certification: • Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) – basic first aid and oxygen application • Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) – EMR skills with additional training in basic life-saving medications (albuterol, aspirin, glucagon, Narcan and nitroglycerin), more advanced airway assistance and bleeding control techniques Nick Maleska, MD Associate Medical Director, Allina EMS In Otsego, there are three different ambulance service areas in our City. They are Allina, CentraCare, and Elk River Ambulance. All three services are dispatched by Allina and receive their medical direction from Allina. None of the services house an ambulance in Otsego, nor do any have plans to house a rig in Otsego soon. Having highly trained firefighter/EMT’s working under the medical director’s oversight will provide a much quicker initial response by EMT’s than currently provided by the ambulance services alone. In Minnesota, most paramedics work on ambulances. EMTs also commonly work on ambulances, but they can also serve with fire departments or other first responder agencies. Firefighters/EMTs bring a unique subset of skills and training to the field of medicine. They can provide medical care while performing complex patient extrication, building stabilization, and medical care in dangerous environments. During mass casualty incidents, the number of patients needing assistance is greater than the number of ambulances first arriving. Fire departments and other first responder agencies help EMS to focus on transporting critical patients to hospitals while assisting with care as additional ambulances arrive. First responder agencies, such as fire departments augment and support care before the ambulance arrives. They also assist ambulance services while transporting critical patients to the hospital. From the time dispatch receives a 911 call, instructions on bleeding control, CPR, and choking resolution are given by phone. These critical treatments can be handed off to trained EMTs before the ambulance arrives. Trained first responders make a difference. • Paramedic – EMT skills with advanced skills in EKG interpretation and interventions, airway management and medication administration Start: Summer 2026 Completion: Spring 2028 Otsego is upgrading its drinking water filtration system to include advanced treatment technologies that remove iron, manganese, and radiochemistry commonly found in source wells, treating up to 3,000 gallons of water per minute. Fertile soil and abundant waterways made the area ideal for crops like wheat, corn, and oats, as well as livestock farming. Families cleared the land, built homesteads, and relied on the rhythms of planting and harvest to guide daily life. Farming influenced how the community developed. Small clusters of shops and mills sprang up at crossroads to serve local farmers, and seasonal markets and fairs became key social and economic events. Agriculture fueled the growth of schools, churches, and other community institutions, weaving farming life into the city’s social fabric. Today, while Otsego has grown and diversified, the imprint of its agricultural past remains. Historic farm roads, land parcels, and structures remind us of a community built on hard work, cooperation, and a deep connection to the land. Anderson Farm Otsego’s oldest census dates to 1855, when records listed only heads of households and family totals. Notably, the only woman named as head of a family was Belinda (Marsh) Spencer. Her sister, Zilpah Marsh, married John McDonald in 1841, and Belinda’s name is the first to appear on the abstract for the John and Della (Bell) Anderson farm pictured here. Threshing Bee (August 15, 1932) A glimpse into community life on the farm— neighbors traveled from farm to farm to help with threshing. While the men worked together in the fields, the women prepared a hearty meal, turning a long day of labor into a social event. Pictured here, Lester Beaudry rides the wagon as Ray Carron sacks grain on the ground in front of Alrick Martin’s threshing machine. DID YOU KNOW? Many of Otsego’s original farm roads still exist today, tracing paths that farmers first used more than a century ago to bring crops and livestock to market. The Big Woods Otsego was once part of the “Big Woods,” a region dense with towering deciduous trees and thick undergrowth. Shown here, loggers retrieve timber from the Mississippi River for delivery to John McDonald’s sawmill. McDonald, who arrived in 1852, was the first permanent settler in Wright County. 12 | 2026 Spring Otsego View FROM OTSEGO’S PAST: AGRICULTURE AND EARLY LIFE Mary Olson Takes Top Honors at 2026 City of Otsego Employee Cook Off!
