AGENDA ITEM DETAILS RECOMMENDATION: City staff recommend the City Council approve the hiring of the Lead Mechanic position. ARE YOU SEEKING APPROVAL OF A CONTRACT? IS A PUBLIC HEARING REQUIRED? No No BACKGROUND/JUSTIFICATION: The Public Works Department has been evaluating and exploring a restructuring of the Fleet division after the resignation of the previous mechanic. Based on information collected and department goals, staff drafted a new job description to provide additional structure to the division, which was approved by the City Council in September. The Lead Mechanic Job Description is an advancement from the current Mechanic Job Description. The position of Mechanic will remain, but instead of two mechanics it will transition to one Lead Mechanic and one Mechanic. The Lead Mechanic will provide work direction to the Mechanic, and have additional qualifications for budgeting, procedures, policies and to provide work direction. This is not an addition of an FTE. James has successfully passed the required pre-employment screening. Staff are recommending that he be hired at a Pay Grade 8, Step 6 and a year of service credit to accrue at year 2 for paid time off (PTO).
